window treatments

Hello again, I have just built a new home, there are 5 fairly large windows in the living room and 4 in the dining room. We have very nice stained molding around them with pretty rosettes on each corner. My home is traditional, what type of curtains if any should I use? I would like to have some type of cover over them, but it seems a shame to cover the woodwork. Any Ideas? I am not so comfortable making choices like these, My confidence isn't the best in the interior design dept! Also, we have very large sofas (sofas and chair and a half- as well as a chaise), and I wanted to place them about a foot in front of the windows, dh wants to have them facing the windows, I think it feel weird to walk into a room and see the backs of the sofas? Am I being silly?

There are hundreds of window treatment designs that are available that you can mount on the inside of your windows and still showcase your wonderful woodwork. Backs of furniture may not be your best option but adding a sofa table with a beautiful floral arrangement or art piece can disguise it. Call a local interior decorator. It will be worth the investment. Carman in Ohio, Decor & You columbus

K, you could hang a decorative curtain rod slightly higher and slightly wider than your mouldings, so that when the curtain panels are open, the panels are not blocking the window frame. if privacy is an issue, you could hang simple bamboo blinds inside the frame itself, use a lighter weighted fabric (or sheers) or even a fabric roman shade, depending on your decorating style....if the space is casual, you could even use a sheer fabric stretched on two tension rods (one at the bottom and one at the top) and apply it to the bottom half of your window. as far as the furniture placements goes, is the room to be used for tv viewing or conversation? place your furniture to fit the use of the room...if the view from your windows is spectacular, you could make the view your focal point and place your furniture so that all seats face it and each other.

thank you both for your help, I was in the middle of moving in, so It took a while to get back online, and have the time to stop back here. All the ideas are great, I can probably use both in different rooms.

K, just a thought......if you are unsure of what style curtains are best for your home, you should take a look at the 'country curtains' catalog or even 'jc penney' just to get an idea of what styles are available and what you like. it's a great idea resource. personally, i like simple, straight curtain panels in a nice fabric. this style is a classic one that never goes out of style, is never fussy, and essentially it's the fabric you choose that can tailor them fit your personal taste. if you are a sewer (or know someone who is) it may be more cost effective (and definitely more custom since you can hand pick the fabric) to make them yourself (depending on the fabrics you choose) as most curtains are sold one panel per package.
