A neutral color might tone down the red so it's not too overpowering, and make a nice back drop for whatever furniture you will be using. I think you'll find that you have so many more choices than you originally thought. You could go with bold contrasts for a crisp, modern look. Like white or off-white walls with black furniture, bright colored accents, framed posters, and chrome lamps. You could go with golden tones for an opulent or exotic look, like cream, yellows, gold, or golden brown walls, rich exotic looking furniture, Oriental area rugs, exotic and colorful art (think Middle eastern/sultan's den). You could go neutral or lighter earth tones like beige, tan, or khaki walls, neutral furniture of medium wood tones, and whatever accents and artwork you already have that will go. You might could even do a pale, muted mossy green with neutral/earth tones. (Greens are a direct compliment of red.)You could go wild with varying shades of reds, violets, purples, lavender, and maybe a little red-orange also. (Like the inside of "I Dream of Genie"'s bottle?)

I would think that any color scheme you could come up with might be dictated by what it is that you plan to use the space for.For a kids play area, I would play up the red by using other primary colors. For an office or family room, I would play down the red with lots of neutral tones of cream, taupe, beige etc., and likely lay down some larger scale area rugs in similar colors to tone down the red. For an media/entertainment area or sports bar area, you could deepen the effect of the red with darker colored walls or wood tones.

You could also use a light cucumber green for a cool Asian feel. Or a blue to deepen the red. Red goes with almost anything so at least it's an easy color to work with.
