room to room decorating

I am redecorating most of my house, just updating the bathrooms, laundry room and kids rooms. Our house has a lodge theme, but I would like to change the main bathroom to a more ocean/aquatic theme. Is that out of the realm of possibilities? Should I stick with the same theme throughout the house?

Yes, by all means, decorate different rooms in different themes. However, I would recommend you keep all the common areas fairly cohesive in theme. Like if your entry, family room, dining room, and kitchen are all open or visible to each other, keep the colors and styles where they blend easily with each other. (Like a country feel in the kitchen, a hunting/fishing lodge theme in the family room, and a country inn feel in the dining area.Aquatic/beach themes are very common in bathrooms. I could easily picture a "seaside beach cottage", "tropical fish", or "country cabin-at-the-lake/fishing" theme in a house with an overall Lodge theme going on. And kids like to express themselves a little in their own rooms. I always found it helpful to narrow down their choices based on their tastes/interests, then let them make the final decision. My daughter was bad about changing her mind frequently, then wishing later she'd gone with my suggestion of neutral "bones" with seasonal or whimsical touches that were easier/cheaper to change as their interests and tastes changed.I recently visited a cousin who was fixing up the "old family home place" (old farmhouse/falling down shack) very cute, country, and rustic. They put something on the walls in a bedroom that looks just like the inside of a log cabin (wood planking and some kind of plaster/filler in the cracks), and their furniture was very old-fashioned and traditional with a four poster bed and all. The bedding colors were warm, rich reds and browns, with a touch of gold, and little touches like a lace dresser scarf, antique basin and pitcher on the chest of drawers, a quilt rack with quilts hanging on it, and an antique trunk and rocking chair. Very nice, simple, and rustic, yet refined. Something like that might tie in with your Lodge theme. I could easily see a girl's room (or mom and dad's) in a Victorian theme and have a nearby bath in seaside beach cottage theme. Or an outdoorsy or southwest themed boys room, to tie in with a "fishing cabin at the lake" themed bathroom (a perfect spot for that talking Big Mouth Bass novelty item).
