red walls but maybe makes room to dark

tikki
I absolutely love my red walls in a 20 x 40 dining /living room with cathedral ceilings. I have several black and pine pieces of furniture. My drapes are Waverly black background with white magnolias. I am thinking I need to bring in more white. I added an arched mirror in white borders to help reflect light. Should I consider adding white wall trim such as a chair rail? I have added a few floral arrangements in white. What else can I do? I'm trying to keep a French Country theme. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Deb in Florida

I'd try some white accents that wouldn't be hard to change if need be. I have a trio of mirrors with white frames clustered on 1 wall. You might consider pictures with a variety of frames, some chunky or "old fashioned", all painted white; snapshots clustered in one frame, a family group portrait, even pets would make a personal statement while adding the white accent you are looking for. I'm trying to picture a chair rail with cathedral ceilings but I'm afraid it might emphasize the height of the ceilings too much. Ooh, how about a piece of red and white toile fabric in a white frame? Or maybe a black frame to tie in with the drapes? Good luck - I'm sure your room will be lovely.

Sure, white trim or chair rail sounds great. Live with it a while, and see how you like it. Don't think of it as too dark, think of it as cozy, add some soft lighting and candles, and voila! You have an instant "beauty treatment" that will give you a romantic glow.
