painting wooden furniture

Page
Our living room is panelled in cedar, installed on the bias, and we have a big stone fireplace. (As you might expect, we live in the country!) Because the room is fairly dark, a friend suggested some white/light painted furniture would serve to brighten it. So I'd like some advice on this. To start, I have an old (maybe '50s) wood veneer table that can't be refinished, so it would make a good candidate for painting. I don't think I want a stark white look, but I'm not sure how to make it look "French country", which is the style I like. Anybody have information or advice on techniques, colours, antiquing?

I'm bumping this cause I'm still hoping someone will have expertise! The other day I saw an episode of Trading Spaces and one of the designers used this technique: painted the item a darker colour with red on top, then waxed it once everything was dry. This took some of the red off, letting the darker base colour show through. My question is: if I painted the table white and then waxed it to distress the finish (showing some of the brown wood underneath), what kind of finish does the wax leave? Is it a dry surface? Would I have to be extra careful putting items on the table (like telephone, papers)? Any and all advice will be gratefully received!

They also make a paint that leaves a crackle finish that would work. paint a base color and then put the crackle paint over top of it.
