painting small bathroom
duxy1
I am planning on painting our bathroom. It is small, though it has the tub/shower and everything else, except a window. My question is whether or not to paint it a pastel or more rich color, or if I can do a two tone with darker on the bottom and lighter on the top with maybe a border inbetween. I am considering an aqua color.

I love the idea of the aqua and I have the same situation as you, no window. One thing I've considered is painting stripes horizontally around the room using a pale aqua, and then a paler shade of aqua. Kinda make people wonder if there are really stripes or not. I'm also going to re-do my vanity in an espresso color with lighter shade of espresso on the counter top. My tub/shower and commode are both not exactly white and not exactly beige. Your thoughts Duxy?

Sounds like a nice contrasting color scheme. Mine are all white, and we are not changing the vanity this time around. Thanks for your imput.

If my fixtures were white, I'd do exactly the same thing. I think the aqua and white will look so updated and spa-like. Are you changing out the hardware? If so, to what?

Go with the lightest choices you have, it will be easier to live with and give you better light. I painted my walls a dark color (light tiles on the bottom half of the walls) and it really darkened the space up a lot, and I have a window. It took awhile to get used to.Aqua sounds great. I like the "aquatic" sounding theme even. If you want a two tone, how about tourqoise or a darker blue on the bottom, like all the shades of the ocean. You can change out accessories, rugs, etc... to change the look from time to time.

That all sounds great and I am really looking forward to doing this. I don't think I will be changing the fixtures, though, but we are going to be putting in shower doors. This way I don't have to fight with cleaning a shower curtain. We are on well water and it has a lot of rust in it, so I am always cleaning rust stains.
Shapeshifter78
Instead of shower doors that will require cleaning all the time, why not think about some inexpensive clear or opaque vinyl shower curtains that can either be thrown in the washer with a load of towels, or re-purposed some way and replaced? We do not have the rust to contend with but we have extremely hard water that is nearly impossible to clean off. I usually replace shower curtains 3 times a year and re-use the old ones as water proof lawn equipment covers, paint cloths, etc.

If you have rusty well water, I'd would NOT go with a shower door either. It will end up staining everything. A shower curtain is much easier to clean or replace than shower doors, and if you ever decide to remove the shower door, it will mar your tub.

I also have a very small bath, white toilet/tub/sink, no window, and I wanted something lively. I used a soft lime green all over, then for something a little different I painted the ceiling a bright white and then used a shiny black about 4 inches down the wall from the ceiling and about 6 inches on the ceiling to make the walls long longer than they are. Sort of like a mock crown moulding. I got some cheap door moulding and framed the mirror in that painted in the same shiny black and added a black and glass shelving unit above the toilet. It looks great!
Shapeshifter78
Wow, that sounds great and I really like your idea of framing the mirror. Because of the size, and that it does have some minor damage on the bottom, I was actually thinking about doing a decorative etching with one of those kits, but I wasn't sure the etching would completely cover the damage. I think framing is the way to go.

please rethink the shower doors...they are difficult to keep clean. i would like to remove mine! I too have a small full-sized bathroom in my basement with no windows and am considering a paint scheme. I'm also considering two-toned walls with a soft, clean spring-like shade of green on the bottom, and keeping the white on the top half, but, I do like the aqua shade you mentioned. Go for it! It is after all just paint! If you don't like it, just repaint it!

These all sound like great ideas. I am only considering shower doors because I am tired of the throw away curtain. I can clean the rust with a great cleaner called "the works" It does work great. I like the idea of the doors because they seem to finish off the bathroom better. I had them in another house we had and I loved them. I am also painting our master bathroom black and white. I think it will look sharp. We have all white fixtures and tiling in that one and I think the black will set it off nice. There is a window in this one and it has a southern exposure, so it gets lots of light. After all, your right its just paint!!

Don't throw away your shower curtain.....just throw it in the wash with some Iron Out and it will come clean again with no work at all.

Have you considered using pearlized paint?

Okay...I am new to this board. I recently got married and we purchased a manufactured home. I want to paint both bathrooms because the existing wallpaper is hideous. I don't like pastel colors. At all. So I was thinking of doing 3 walls in a nice tan, with one wall bold (like so many living and bedrooms are done these days). One bathroom will be a deep red/maroon. The other will be a rich teal/blue. Has anyone ever tried something like this? How did it go? Was it just weird in such a small space??

Help me please. I just moved into a very cozy apartment all the room sizes are great except for the tiny bathroom with no windows. To make matters worst the tub is a dark green the face bowl and the toilet are both white but the walls are green with a soft blue tall bathroom cabinets. I can not afford to buy anything right now so I was thinking in terms of painting. Can you think of a paint scheme to fix this disaster. In real need of help.
I cant find a name
Many times I've heard that the best remedy for a small room, specially bathrooms is to paint it in a light color because it opens up the room. Also if you're going to put tiles to put it diagonally (diamond shape) instead of lineal, because of the same reason, it gives it a open feel.If you love color, you can add it with the accessories.
