painting question

I have an open floor plan in my house which is wonderful for entertaining but very difficult when trying to paint. My living room and kitchen area is seperated by a half wall with a large walkway. I want to paint the two rooms different colors but are unsure how to break up the rooms on a long wall shared by both rooms. Any ideas? Molding from floor to celing?

If the half wall goes all the way across from one side of the room to the other (with the walk way in the middle?) you might try "framing" around the sides and across the top. Like building the wall up, leaving huge open "window" areas. It need only be a few inches or a foot or so out from the side walls and ceiling, or it could be in the form of molding or a wallpaper border. This would allow a divider between the colors of the separate areas. It should be fine to leave the ceilings and moldings all one color, no matter how you divide up the room with wall colors.I once saw a restaurant that had a little decorative valance type structure hanging from the ceiling to form a cute canopy effect over the counter. The owner noticed me looking, and showed me it was installed with heavy duty construction staples on the underside, and it had a practical as well as decorative purpose, to help keep the airflow from the A/C vents behind the counter where it was needed most.

catwoman - Did it look like a curtain hanging from the ceiling or was it more of a billowing valance from the ceiling? I ask because it sounded like a cool idea and I've been wanting to separate my dining room from living room (I have the same problem of one continous room) and have been thinking of installing some sort of curtain to separate the two. Not sure how it would actually turn out though so I am a little nervous to attempt it.

Foodlover, it was more of a short valance or canopy that hung straight down. It hung down from the ceiling about 12" to 18", was fairly "structured", had little notches for a scalloped or pleated effect, and followed the shape of the lunch counter, kind of u-shaped. But it would work in a straight line also. I'm thinking you might could divide the room with the "valance" and possibly put curtains (even sheers) at the sides only, pulled back with a decorative cord to create the effect of a large, open window or doorway. This would divide the room visually, but still allow an open feeling.
