painting kitchen cabinets

My house has an open floor plan. The kitchen and dining room are separated only by a bar. You can see the kitchen and dining room from the living room and entry hall. The entry hall and dining room each have dark wood (walnut) chairrail. The trim around the french doors off the dining room is also walnut, and the other accent wood throughout the house is dark. Which I like. My kitchen cabinets match all this trim. I would love to paint them a cream/antiquey color to match my kitchen and dining room walls but am not sure if I should. It's almost like the rest of my home is "anchored" by the dark trim (with pale walls) and I wonder if the kitchen would just look like it's "floating". Any opinions?

I like the idea of having the wood cabinets match the rest of the wood in the house to promote a feeling of continuity. I would change the accent or wall color instead of the cabinets. I'm not a decorator...this is just my humble opinion.

I agree with changing the color of the wall, specially your back splash, to a light tone to lighten the area. Another thing you can try is to add under cabinet lighting to really add some sparkle to the area or even remove the panels of a couple of doors and replace them with glass (may even frost the glass) and light them from inside. Another thing I have seen is to paint your doors only, a couple of shades lighter or a contrasting color all together... the idea in picture while not the best it gets the idea across. http://www.bertch.com/bertch_web/custom/cusmtomkitchenbig/twotonekitchen.jpg Good luck!

k l, I think I agree with you. And mg21, I think I will go with painting/replacing the doors, possibly with glass.Thanks:)

Another trick is to just use a coat of high gloss varnish over whatever you have left of that wood. It makes the cabinet trim easier to clean, and catches the light.
