We are painting a brand new home and all the baseboards/doors/windows are wood but our interior designer has suggested we paint it white..we don't want to paint over this beautiful wood....should we?? or can we find nice colors that would also go with wood....he says white would make it look more elegant??? any suggestions..mommyov2

I have a lot of natural wood trim and doors and after 23 years I've grown tired of it. I've begun painting the pieces, either a beautiful off white called Navajo White, or a much much lighter shade of the wall paint. To me it looks fresh and updated but honestly, if I were doing a brand new home, I don't know what I would do. Good luck, whatever way you go.

hi! congrats on the new home! I personally prefer white woodwork to wood, but, that is besides the point. I once had a decorator explain it to me this way: If you want people to notice the window and the woodwork, stain it, don't paint it white. If you want the windows and woodwork to disappear into the decor then paint them white. It is an optical illusion...the white around the windows "disappears" showing off the view, not the window. And the darker tones stop the eye from noticing the view, and you notice the window itself. I hope that it makes sense. Good Luck!

I thinks its entirely up to you. If you like to wood look, keep it, there are tons of colors that will look good with it. Almost all the trim in our house it white...I love the look of it. I like traditional design style so white is a given--I find wood trim, especially if it is light, and has alot of wood grain looks a little to log-cabin for my tastes. If you aren't sure, I'd stick with the wood...its a big pain to strip paint and re-stain!
