I am building a lodge and have knotty pine in the living room and knotty pine 4ft from the floor up (chair rail hight) in my bedroom. I can't decide what to do for the walls-paint or paper; I prefer yellow or red but am afraid the yellow would not look good with the knotty pine and the red would be too dark, Help!

Why don't you pick the furniture and bedding for the room first. Then you can pull one of those colors onto the walls. I would suggest paint, just because it is cheaper, more easily changed, and you can get any color you want. You can always add a border of wall paper or stenciling for added interest/color/design.I think the yellow or red would look fine, but you might just need a different tone/hue of those colors to go with the pine. I'm assuming the pine has reddish and or golden tones in it? If so, a mellow, muted shade of buttery-gold might look better than a clear or bright yellow. And a ruddy, rusty-red might look better than a bright red or maroon.

You might want to shop for bedding first, and take a color from there. I would personally say that it's best to paint, because it's easier to change than wallpaper when your tastes change in a few years. You might try sueded paint. It gives a slight texture to the wall that actually resembles suede, and is not flat like regular paint, so it's a nice alternative to wallpaper. Ralph Lauren makes a nice one, and it comes in some great colors that you might actually like and that will compliment your log cabin style. You simply roll on the first coat, and then with a cross hatch stroke brush on the second.
