living room ledges
Southern Sister
My new home has ledges on two walls and I have no idea (other than silk greenery) to put there. They have no electrical outlets and are pretty much a dust collectors. They are 18" high and 10" deep - one ledge goes over a doorway and is about 12 feet long. I would go check out neighbors' ideas of how they decorated their 'ledges' however, my home is the only model like this in my sub-division. Suggestions have included baskets to shrunken heads - HELP!

OOOhhh, I love ledges and even though I hate dusting they are a great way to display things that you don't want cluttering up tables and furniture. Yes, the silk greenery (and silk flowers) is a great way to accent display pieces. Either weave long garlands around items or intersperse sections of greenery among the display pieces. You can put all kinds of stuff up there, interesting pottery, sculpture, decorative tins, decorative plates (on little display stands), or anything you collect. If something is too short to be seen well, you can put a little wooden box under it or set it on top of a decorative tin. Simple baskets can be tilted forward for better viewing. For the holidays stick a few silk poinsettias around. If you want to "light up" the ledge for festive occasions, there are battery powered Christmas lights, battery powered tea light candles, and those round battery powered touch lights you could put up there and only turn on when you are entertaining. I got my husband to put up a shelf over a doorway on an odd, offset wall and in the kid's rooms. In the family room we have several baskets, silk greenery, a toy train, a few antique looking books (old encyclopedias from a garage sale), decorative tins, a decorative music box, and a hand-whittled carving. In the daughter's room we have a few favorite old stuffed animals, dolls, silk flowers, her old Easter bonnets and decorated hats, a glass bowl with seashells, and various souvenirs and decorative items. In the son's room he has some sports items, model cars, planes, and trains, books, and a set of martial arts swords/knives on a decorative stand. There are a gazillion things you could do. Cruise the furniture store displays for ideas you like and copy them.
