leather couch

Does anyone know of a way to restore the luster of a leather couch? Mine has taken a beating after two little kids and it doesn't shine anymore. It looks dull and dry. It's 100% Italian leather (dark brown). I heard somewhere that you can rub lotion on it, but I don't want to do anything until I know for sure that's safe. I also don't want to use any chemical products from the store. I'm looking more for a home remedy, like lotion. Does anyone know?

OK- this might sound crazy, but try rubbing some olive oil in a small corner of the couch. This worked on my hubby's leather jacket collar and will work on the couch. Once you're done rubbing it in, just let it sit for a few minutes n then wipe with a dry wash cloth.

I have never heard of a "home remedy" for cleaning leather, but I have leather furniture, and it came with a leather cleaning/conditioning kit. Mine is in liquid form and doesn't have a chemical smell, or much of an odor at all. It said to use it once a month, but I only do so maybe once or twice a year. If you can't find something specifically for leather furniture, you can clean it with saddle soap (follow the directions), then after it dries, use a leather conditioner and buff it with a soft cloth. You might ask at a furniture store, a leather specialty store, a shoe/boot store, or check in the cleaning supplies section of most stores for the leather cleaner, and most shoe departments have saddle soap by the shoe polish. I also Googled "Natural leather cleaner" and came up with http://www.bee-natural.com/. Apparently they make environmentally friendly leather care products.

I almost forgot.... I know someone who uses mink oil on leather saddles, boots, and softball mitts as a conditioner. I've never used it, but it's easy to find, usually by the shoe polish in most shoe departments or sporting goods stores.

Thanks, I had heard about the olive oil, too. I may give it a try.

Pledge. It is cheap and does the trick. I use it on all of my leather furniture.

There are some great tips for cleaning all kinds of stains on leather at http://furniture.about.com. Look under "Care & Repair," and you'll find an article on how to clean most any kind of furniture, including leather. Good luck!

Leather is a natural and porous material, so use natural products to give it luster. it also requires regular maintenence and polish, other wise it might dry and loose shine and crack. I recommend at least every 3 months. Try canola oil, tocopherol (vitamin E oil) and peanut oil or linseed oil. not too expensive and should do the job. Do not use anything synthetic on your prized possession. (no baby oil, lotion or hair pomades)Let the product sink in for 3 hours and then remove excess, leave the couch alone for a day or two, and voila it should come back to life.paraizo_disegno in verita

Wow, thanks. Would olive oil work too? I don't have the other oils you mentioned.
