I also live in NY. I love house plants but dont have a green thumb. A few plants that I have been successful with are spiders, philodendrium, aloe, mother in law tongue, ivy and a fig tree. Have you considered using artificial plants and incorporating fresh bouquets of cut flowers? My local super market and Walmart both offer fresh flowers for a fraction of what a flower shop would charge. I prefer decorating my home this way and incorporating as much from my personal flower beds as possible.

I, too, do not have much of a green thumb (due to inexperience) but I have two peace lilies that have doubled in size, don't need a ton of light and seem to never die off. Every once in a while I get a gorgeous flower as well! As long as you water them every once in a while, they seem to thrive. Good luck!

Definitely peace lilies, ivy, mother-in-law tongue like suggested grow good in low light, or you can always use a good lamp on them several hours a day (they makes special light bulbs for growing plants). If you have the room, natural light or place for a hanging lamp, the humidity in the bathroom is a good place. P.S. "spikey" plants like cactus and m-i-l are bad feng shui if you're into that.
