Can't think of anything else, but repainting it. I did a lot of brick alike faux painting on a white painted brick wall in my house, it looks like real brick now. The key is not to go with only one color when doing it (it will look artificial). Try Google too. It might give you other alternatives.

Getting paint off of brick is pretty hard unless you want to sand blast it. Stripping it off with a stripper won't get it out of all of the little holes, so your option is paint. Go to a good quality paint store and ask them what to use; you will need to tell them the type of brick it is (lannon stone, face brick) if it gets hot or warm to the touch and if there is a grease build-up. There are so many paints on the market that would look good on the brick and the other writter is correct, plan on using two or three different shades over the initial solid coat (painted on with a brush) and apply it with a sponge (just in areas) to give it the real brick look.My choice personally is Dark Brick red as the solid coat with sponges of black and Indian red, to me this looks the most natural. Good luck!

I ran into the same problem rehabbing my den. As I was pulling up carpet I found brick on the step going into the other half which was added on before my purchase , I was worried what to do with it , finally inspiration came I was going with old western look since my love is horses. This brick had glue on it from carpet padding I had to scrap with wire brush to clean it , it took some time , and alot of sore muscles, but anyway I painted them with red tile floor paint , for a aged look I mixed a clear glaze with very light yellow for a light tint for the creaves, then went over all of it , with a moth tinted glaze with I had mixed using several colors , dapped in on with brush(don't use sparingly) and took old t-shirt and pulled up excess. Just play with it in one area first to acquire your desired look. If you just want the red back , just paint and leave seams white. I hope this helps. Good Luck
