decorating without carpeting.

I have allergies and cannot handle carpeting. Now, I want to decorate without it. That would leave my living room and dining room floors bare. I have white tile with green caulk. Any ideas?

Not much traffic on this message board, especially at night.I'm not sure exactly what type of ideas you are looking for. Are you asking what would go with your existing floor, or what types of flooring to use? We really need more information on what you are asking, and what you have now, so I have a few questions:1. Has the carpet already been removed, and what type of subflooring do you have under your existing floor (concrete/slab foundation or wood/pier and beam construction)?2. Is your living room and dining room connected, as in one big room, semi-connected, or in separate rooms? 3. I've never seen or heard of green caulk on a floor, did you mean tiles with green grout? If tiles, are they the large (12" or larger) ceramic tiles, and are they in both living and dining rooms? Or is it white vinyl with a green design?4. Are you looking for suggestions on changing your floor, or what type of flooring to use, or how to decorate around what you already have? 5. If you want ideas about decorating, what do you currently have to work with, and what "look" are you going for, or favorite colors?6. Can you post any pictures?

Smith,There are lots of options for you. Wood floors are very popular now and you can get many styles in prefinished with much better finishes than the old site sanded type, which would probably raise too much dust for your allergies. There is also natural stone which is very popular where I live...Slate & travertine especially. Also, if you'd like something 'green' and easy to care for, there is marmoleum (linoleum) flooring. You can also paint your plywood or concrete floors and they can look wonderful. Those are just a few suggestions. Pick up some home dec magazines and see what you like. Go to your local flooring and/or paint store (not a box store as you never know who is going to serve you there...) and ask questions. Good luck!

Are you looking to replace the white tiles? Or to decorate around the exisiting flooring? If you're looking to replace the flooring you have, you might want to consider a "floating" floor. They are laid down, but not adhered to the floor below it. They come in laminate wood and bamboo etc. This way, you would not need to tear up the tiles. If you're looking to decorate with the existing flooring, how about a floor mat? You use a piece of canvas (even a canvas painters drop cloth) and prime it well, and then paint a design. It's easiest to use geometric shapes or stripes, so you can simply tape off your design and paint it, or even use stencils. Once you have a design that you like, seal it with several coats of polyurethane. Your new mat can be as large or as small as you need it to be, matches your decor because you painted it to match, and is CHEAP! It is easy to clean: just shake the dirt off and wipe it clean. I don't know much about allergies, but, perhaps you could use sisal mats. They are not very expensive and you can find them at home depot and such places.I hope this helps alittle.
