ceramic tile floor - can i put vinyl tiles over it

rubes
Dying to change my white, slippery tile floor - does anyone know if I can just put down vinyl tiles directly on to it (the size is about the same) - do I have to put a barrier down? If I know I don't have to destroy the floor - I can have a new floor by Thanksgiving!!!Please tell me.

I think you should ask a flooring expert. Even if you can put the stick on tile down, it should be on a flat surface, so you'd have to "float" in any indentations or unlevel spots (like the grout between the tiles) before putting down the stick on tile. Even on a smooth surface they still usually recommend you put down adhesive before installing the stick on tiles or they may not stick good.If your ceramic tile is still in good shape, I wouldn't mess it up with adhesives or floor mud, you (or whoever) will have a terrible time getting it off later. And removing a ceramic tile floor is no picnic either.

I can understand why you wouldn't want a slippery floor, especially if it gets water on it. Throw rugs that are heavy can be placed in areas where you are likely to get water on the floor, and they can be put down with two sided sticky carpet tape. Even a long runner infront of the sink, and one in front of the range, can cure a lot of the slippery areas, but runners that are heavy enough would have to be cleaned professionally. Good luck.
