blinds

We have just build a new home and I am fighting with myself with what to do for blinds in the windows. I had a local business come out and give me a quote - $5,000. for cellular blinds for all windows with installation. I am fairly certain that I could buy them myself and install them for much cheaper but haven't done any shopping as of yet. Does anyone have any input? Is it worth the additional $ to have someone else take care of it for me? The money that I save could go toward new furniture, etc being that our list of "wants" is huge with a new home.

I'm assuming you have a lot of large and/or tall windows?I am not familiar with solar blinds or their installation but anything that will help you save energy and helps keep your heating and cooling bills down is an investment that will add to the value of your home and save you money in the long run. (Extra insulation, ceiling fans, high efficiency appliances, tinted windows, shade trees, etc...) Especially if you live in a hot, sunny climate and/or have bitter cold winters. So yes, it would pay to have it done by a professional unless you are very handy and knowledgeable. Always get several estimates and check out the businesses first (going with the cheapest bid does not always save you the most money in the long run).If the energy bills eat you alive, you'll never be able to take care of all those "wants" for your new house.

First of all get more estimates. Second of all it is not that hard to install blinds, you really don't have to be that handy, so if you want to save the extra money...hang them yourself. Next...start small...budget. Start on the first floor or the rooms you spend the most time in.
