barn roof apt.

i'm not a professional decorator, but, to make your apartment look bigger, i would suggest painting all walls and ceilings the same soft neutral shade of taupe (nothing too dark). this color will match virtually anything that you put into it, and painting the ceiling and walls the same will make your space look larger.i would also make every effort keep clutter under control and visit even your local ikea store for different & economical storage ideas. less clutter always looks like more space instantly! a clothing bureau in an entryway in the living room provides not only a place for a lamp, a display area but also alot of storage. plus, it looks great and it's interesting!as far as furniture placement goes. just keep adjusting pieces until they looks right. not every thing needs to go against a wall, try using angles. if your small place looks comfortable and interesting, people won't notice how small it is!

I have noticed that when I take my curtains down the room appears to be larger. If this is a possibility for you I would consider it in the common rooms and put up window treatments in the rooms you want privacy in such as bath and bed. Clean windows also help.

Keep furniture and knick knacks to a minimum and use shelves on the walls for display, rather than floorstanding pieces. All the suggestions above are also very good ones. Go to google.com and search on "decorating in small spaces" for more ideas.

Can anyone tell me how to make a one bedroom aptment that is built above a garage look like it is bigger ? Kitchen and living room in front part washroom and laundry in middle bedroom in back . Plus the ceiling is like the old barn roofs so it tapers down. What colors would match kitch and live? or should I do separate?

I think un-separated would make it look bigger. I'd paint everything all one color, or go with a monochromatic color scheme in light colors. Maybe paint the walls and ceiling either the same color, or the walls slightly darker for a more streamlined look. If the floor plan is open (few or no walls) you can visually "separate" areas with large area rugs and furniture placement, and use only the bare minimum or art and knick knacks on walls and surfaces (think minimalistic). Keep things stored out of sight, in containers under beds, closets, or in end and coffee tables with built in storage (or better yet pare down items that would need to be stored and get furniture that has a more open look). And hopefully you have flooring that is the same all through the apt. and is a solid look, not checkerboard squares or a busy pattern. If you need any other ways to separate areas, try to use pieces that you can see thru, like open shelves, folding screen with sheer or lacy material, lattice or ironwork, hanging beads, or plants that aren't too thick with foliage. Also, if you have enough room, try to avoid placing furniture up against the walls with the sloping roof, and try to draw the eye to the center of the room, or to the far end of the room.
