a large while wall

1baddkitty
I have a family room/dining room that I am trying to redecorate. The room is 15x30 with vaulted ceiling. My problem is what to do with the one wall that is a continuous 15 feet long. The wall across from it is broken up by windows and a door and on the far wall is a fireplace with floor to ceiling brick. What do I do with the long empty wall? Do I put in lots of little things in groups or large things or both?

I'd suggest starting with the big things to balance out the windows, door and fireplace, then only add little things if it needs more interest. One large painting on the wall over a sofa or table makes much more impact than a bunch of little things spread across the room. If you only have small things, group them together, but they still need to have an overall look or shape. If you can see it well from across the room and can tell what it is, then it's making a statement. If you have to get up close to see what it is then it's just confusing.

If your furniture will be grouped around the fireplace and windows, with nothing against the 15 foot wall, you might try making some "vignettes". Like an aquarium, some bookshelves, or a small foyer table with mirror over it to reflect light from the window or fireplace. It could have a lamp or candles on it, or put wall sconces on each side of the mirror. Or if your dining table will be on that end, you could put some large shallow shelves on the wall over the table, or a large painting to anchor and separate separate the eating space from the family room. Tall plants or decorative folding screens are useful also where you have large empty spaces.
