What color for painting our bedroom?

shellyt
We just bought a house and the walls are all white. I want to start with one room at a time, first with our master bedroom. Our dresser and dressing table are black with gold trim. Our bedding is red with gold accents. It's JC Penney's Secret Garden bedding set. Our drapes are sheer gold. My question is what color to paint the white walls. I dont know if i shoud paint all walls red, may be too much. I was thinking about painting the wall red where the drapes are as an accent wall and leaving the rest white? Or do you have suggestions for another color that would go well on all/1 wall/leftover 3 walls? What do you think? I need ideas! Thanks!

Usually I'm not one to jump on the idea of a faux finish wall, but what about painting the walls a shade of goldish-taupe to pick up the accent color of your bedspread in a suede-like finish? The color of the bedding is beautiful, but depending on the style of your home, the red might be hard to pull off. If your home is more of a grand style than contemporary or simple, I'd say go for it! Hope that helps!

You definitely need something to go with the reds and golds besides white walls! I'm with LizzyC and love the idea of the faux suede finish and that red might be overpowering. (If you're into Feng Shui decorating, it warns that too much red in the bedroom will cause arguments.) If you're unsure, you can't hardly go wrong with beige walls. I see several shades in the red/gold pattern you could go with, from a light beige to a tan or khaki color. It would make a great neutral background that will make a great backdrop for your current decor, and also if you want to re-decorate in the future it will be much easier to work around than the red.

Thanks for the advice, and I won't paint the walls red. You're right, it could be a little too much. I wasn't sure what a faux suede finish is and looked it up online. Could a beginner pull off something like that!?

How much of a beginner? If you've done a little painting before, then yes, you could pull it off - if you're willing to go to the trouble. If you're not sure about going to that much trouble, a coat or two of paint will make so much difference it won't matter. If you've never painted before, get plenty of instruction or a friend to help. Let us know how it went.
