Transom windows

kypeach
I would love some ideas for window treatments in our great room and kitchen. The windows and doors have transoms across the top. I love the sunlight coming through, but feel it needs something. My husband would like to leave them bare, but I want some type of treatment, just not sure what. Any ideas? Thanks!

Maybe some sheer material swagged across them, or you can get this stick on window design stuff at Home Depot or Lowes. It comes in a large poster sized roll, like contact paper, only its transparent and has various designs. You just cut it to fit and stick it on to add color and interest without blocking out light and an open feel. They have a stained glass design, a craftsman style window design, florals, blue sky w/clouds, and a Monet looking water color, among others.

If the transoms are directly above your windows, why not hang your hardware and curtains from that upper level? The result could be either fabulous and dramatic (if you choose a darker colored or a formal fabric) or light and billowy (if you choose a white, or casually patterned or even seersucker type fabric). Hanging the curtains close to the ceiling will make your whole room seem taller and bigger too.

I think catwoman's idea of sheer material is great! Swags are nice or even thin panels (they need not be enough to cover the whole window) just as decorative accents, gathered at the sides. The stained glass idea is great too. You can even see if there's a local art school and some student can paint your glass for a reasonable amount. It adds an individual touch to it and can be customized to adjust to the rest of the look. Ask to see a colored sketch of the design beforehand though!
