Tips for decorating 2 story wall w/ fireplace
blayzegirl
Our great room has a large wall w/ a small fireplace. I'm not sure what would look ok above the fireplace. Ideally a large print or mirror..but, large enough for the wall is too large for the fireplace! This room is open to the kitchen and the 2nd floor. Any suggestions?

You could do a long, narrow banner or tapestry. The height would stand up to the size of the wall, but the narrow width would keep it from overwhelming the fireplace. A much more involved solution - the firm I work with often designs built-ins around fireplaces, like low cabinetry with shelves above. This would give your fireplace more presence, and can also provide a lot of storage. Another idea - maybe something that has meaning to you or your family. I once saw a gorgeous, very high-end home with two story space like you describe, and the husband loved surfing, so they had mounted an antique surfboard on the wall, and it looked fantastic. Good luck!

Yes, anything you can do to add "presence" and make the fireplace look bigger is the first step. If not, it will be dwarfed by the large wall. If it is plain, with no mantel or just a shelf, add the largest trim around the edges you can, move the shelf if you have to, or add a bigger, wider, thicker, one, large ceramic tiles, a painted faux mantle even. Any thing large and dramatic over the fireplace like the large print or large framed mirror would then look more balanced.
