Room lighting ideas
azzouzy
Hi everyone, I really need your help so please post all the ideas and tips you can come up with. I'm moving to a new apartment and I'm decorating. I have a big room which I will turn into a living room. Only one problem, the ceiling is very low and to add on there is a ceiling beam across the room, exactly in the middle. Putting any normal lighting is a big problem. I thought about recessed light, but discovered that it even lowers the ceiling more and the room will be like a tomb. Please send me any ideas you have to light the room adequately, but I need bright light. I don't like soft lighting and it has to be very well lit. Pleeeeeeeeeease help!!!!!!!

Definitely a challenge. I still think recessed lighting is your best bet, especially if they are adjustable where you can point them in different directions. I don't particularly care for tract lighting, but you might find some with smaller lights instead of the "can looking" spotlights. Maybe attach them to both sides of the beam and try to get them in a color that blends into the beam. You might also try up lighting with "spotlights" on the floor around the perimeter of the room, or the corners.I'd suggest you keep the furniture low profile, as in lower to the ground with low backs, hang any artwork on the walls a little lower than usual (shoulder instead of eye level), draw the eye down with colorful rugs and maybe some large floor pillows, and only have short guests (LOL). Stay away from tall furniture, like armoires, and if you have (or plan to get) a TV, try to keep it low and wide, like on a short console shelf rather than a prominent entertainment center. And mirrors to reflect whatever natural light you have from windows, skylights, or lighting. I can picture modern/contemporary, clean lines, simplicity, and monochromatic color schemes. Nothing too "slouchy" or "fussy" or ornate. (It used to be called Danish Modern, not sure what its called now). That's all I got for now.

What about using paint on the walls and ceilings to draw the eye up? I used some molding painted the same color as the ceiling and attached it to the wall about 3" below the ceiling. It seems to make the room seem taller.

Those are all great ideas. Different size table lamps at various heights work wonders too. And there are many pretty ones to choose from.

Wow!! Those are really great ideas. Thank you so much everyone. I'm going to try the track light like catwoman suggested, I think it's a great idea. I also love the wall painting idea. About the short guests, that would be difficult coz me and mum are 5'9", my brother is 6'6" (LOL). Thanks everyone, if you can think of anything new please tell me..
