Painting an open kitchen/livingroom
JillB
I am looking for suggestions on paint colors for my livingroom which is also open to the kitchen. Since it is so open I think I need to use the same color throughout, which is hard because I would like a bolder hue in the livingroom than I would opt for in the kitchen. My furniture is dark brown leater, hardwood floors in a natural oak stain and the kitchen cabinets are cherry. I was thinking an avocado green but not sure if that will be overwhelming on the walls. Any suggestions?

Yes, good idea to keep the two rooms cohesive in color and style. I like green, but it isn't for everyone. A little goes a long way, so If you go green, I'd suggest a softer green, like a soft, muted mossy green, a pale blue/green, or an almost neutral light green, as it will be easier to live with. Depends on what kind of decor you have in the kitchen. I would also suggest a pale, buttery yellow or amber, terra cotta, or a light brown that blends between the dark brown furniture and the cherry cabinets in the kitchen.

I used a color called "sweet baby" that was from a Trading Spaces card I found at the paint store. It is a very light yellow that doesn't overpower things. It has sort of a powdery look to it. I like the mossy green too because I have velvet curtains in that color. A "coffe with a lot of cream in it" color would be pretty too but it might look too dark in the summer time. It almost sounds like you could go with a French cafe' look and a green or brown would be nice for that.

It sounds like all the wood and furniture is pretty dark, I'd be careful not to go with too somber a color or the whole place might feel really heavy. If you want a light airy Hemingway in the tropics feel I'd go with an almost chalky white or lighter shade of blue and add gauzy wispy curtains. For a cozy seductive "grown ups live here" feel the amber catwoman suggested would be amazing especially with velvet drapes for drama. Just my 2 cents
