Have you tried painting with a live fruit bat...?? Its very oriental.

Bat?? Very strange response... There are many sites to study Asian art and decor and of course there are differences between countries and cultures, but try shopping in a local Oriental market for ideas. You will find beautiful tea sets, place mats, bowls and plates, table cloths etc. Don't over do it. Keep it simple, restful to the eye. Key palette should be neutral: Black and White: Walls: simple soft Dove gray. Add accents to the room -a small splash of red and / or turquoise. Hancock fabrics has lovely Asian fabric if you are handy. Hope this helps. :-)

Definitely check out some books, museums, Chinese restaurants, Japanese gardens, anything for inspiration. Find an "inspiration piece" such as an Oriental rug, a decorative folding screen, a great painting, a kimono robe, a giant fan... and take your colors from it. If you use the most neutral color on the walls, and use neutral furniture, then you can use Asian accent furniture and accessories. It will be easier to change looks or colors later. Books on Feng Shui are also helpful in color choices, placement of furniture, and good "flow" of energy through the room/house.

My living room and dining room are all one big area, painted (Of all colors) Wal-Mart Cardboard. I divided the area with a light Bamboo Roman Blind that's 96'' by 72''. That gave me a natural color wall in both rooms to build around, I put woven and wooden placemats on the screen with catgut, and use 40 watt bulbs in both rooms to maximize the cozy factor. Fortunately my family bought some Japanese paintings when we were stationed in Japan, and those grace the walls. The centerpiece of my table is a 2 foot tall red samurai statue. Side tables against 2 walls give added surface space, while black modernesque lamps are the sole points of light in the dining area. Overall, a wonderful blend of modern and ancient colors and schemes... I think I did a pretty darned good job.

If you have a Cost Plus World Market in your area, check that out for some ideas. I LOVE that store and go there all the time to find quirky asian trinkets, pictures, etc. You can also find stuff on their online store. I agree with the above post to keep it simple.
