Open concept living
Quan_Ko_Ro
We have an open concept house. The kitchen, dining room & living room are all one big room, no walls, nothing. I would like to paint the kitchen a different color than the DR & LR. We have rustic maple cupboards, with a maple flooring. The pattern of Southwestern/Mexican is the decorative style through out. The kitchen is the first thing you see as you come in the door, but it is the far corner. Can I just paint the kitchen area a tangerine color and the the other walls another color? Would that look too weird? The kitchen cabinets go about half way down either wall. Please HELP!

You might want to paint the one wall that faces you as you enter the room the tangerine color, and the remainder of the walls a less intense, coordinating shade. You could look at the color strip from the paint store that has your color of choice on it and choose one of the lightest shades, or you could go neutral and choose a more sandy shade that has a subtle undertone of orange or yellow to coordinate with the exisiting wood and the accent wall. I wouldn't paint your entire space the saturated orange color, it will overwhelm you. Not to mention, where do you stop painting if it's only the kitchen you wish to paint orange? The transition should be natural, not awkward. Unless you wanted to build in a seperation between the rooms, I think that an accent wall is your best solution. You could then spread the orange in small doses throughout the rest of the open space with interesting fabrics and accessories. This will unify the entire space and give it flow.
