Open Floorplan Colors and Floor, Ceiling & Wall Contrast

Hi everyone, My dilemma is that I am at a standstill about decorating my living room. The room has very light colored natural stone floors and a natural maple vaulted ceiling. Additionally, this room is open to my kitchen which has natural maple cabinets and mid-toned green walls. The green color is a beautiful green with a hint of yellow (it's called Sweet Annie). It is perfectly grayed down so it looks very sophisticated and mellow. The living room faces east, south east and receives a ton of natural sunlight -- all of the morning and early afternoon sun. It's very bright and warm. So I know I should be looking at the warmer colors and I know the compliment to the green of the kitchen would be a reddish violet type color, but I'm very squeamish about choosing a color in the red family for such a large room. Also I want to choose a color that will contrast with the lightness of the floor and ceiling so that the room doesn't look too washed out. After living in rentals with white walls, I NEED AND LOVE color. Can anyone help me with suggestions??????

Well, what colors do you like best? And what colors (including your furniture and artwork) do you plan to use or do you need to use in your new space? If these colors do not work well with the existing green walls, you may want to consider simply painting the walls. You might consider a nice neutral wall color that complements the exisiting wood and stone elements that you have to work with. The neutral walls and flooring can be a backdrop for color in other ways such as furniture pieces, artwork, window treatments and even an accent wall.I also have a fairly open concept on my first floor, so, I have continued the same taupe shade throughout and have a wall exclusive to my living room that I have painted a rich shade of chocolate brown, and have painted the kitchen (while it is an open area, there is enough of a seperation to justify a different color) a soft watery greyish blue shade. The changes in the color are enough to add some interest and break up the taupe, while all the colors are still neutral enough to allow me to be able to change some accessories without needing to change my wall colors.

Hi Ju Ju, I really appreciate your excellent response to my questions and I am currently considering a deep-toned honey wheat, a cafe ole, or a taupe-beige for my main walls. It took me about 6 months to find the sweet annie green so changing it is not an option. Your point about the room's accessories providing the color drama is a great one that few people take into consideration when they love color yet are afraid to put it on the walls or main pieces of furniture. Also I love your color choices. My master suite is on the northwest part of the house and I've chosen a similar palette for those rooms. Again I thank you for your good advice and I hope you'll be around when my next question pops up.
