New House....where to start...???

We have just signed on a new home that will be done in October..(hah! probably more like December..) It is a really open great room with a den off of the entry way that will be our TV watching area.... I am pretty sold on wood for the kitchen, dining, and great room areas....now what I need is help on a color scheme/style for the same area. We live in Arizona, but I don't want the coyote/cactus type southwest decor.... I want to keep it light and relaxing..but with punches of color... The cabinets are going to be a honey colored oak, with black appliances. I am open to suggestions to get my mind flowing!

I grew up with a mom who never, ever varied from white or off-white walls, and I was determined to never, ever live in a white-walled house again. I say, surround yourself with colors and things that you love. Think of your favorite place to be and try to make that your theme. I absolutely cannot STAND having something that everyone else has, so make your place unique!

Thanks Lucky Frog! That is exactly my thinking....I'm thinking of taking inspiration on a "beachy" theme..lots white..airy...etc...kind of a "desert spa" type. I hate white walls. We are in a rental right now...and I would LOVE to paint!

When I think desert spa, I think soft, pale, mossy green, bone, maybe a pale terra cotta. I could really picture pale green walls with your black appliances and honey colored wood. Green isn't for everyone though, and a little goes a long way.A soft pale aqua, or pale, muted blues and greens - the colors of water would bring in your "beach" element along with some "sand" colored neutrals. Browns with pale blue or aqua is a trendy thing right now. Right now I'm really into pale violets and plums with soft botanical/mossy green. But in AZ, I'm thinking beautiful sunsets, so I'd start watching the sunsets for some inspiration palettes. Or check out some brochures from actual desert spas and see what color schemes and decor they use.

A pretty sage green would be great in your kitchen!! I just went out and bought paint yesterday to paint my home. I like the khaki colors!! I went to monarch and bought this color called Santa Fe and for under my chair rail molding in my dining I am going to use a color called Autumn Wheat. I am going to paint the top of my tray ceiling in my master the Autumn Wheat as well. I like accent walls!!

How about neutral walls? I actually have a lovely shade of soft taupe (Benj. Moore Cape Hatteras Sand) on all of my downstairs walls, the stairs leading up stairs, and upstairs hallway. The color actually looks different in each room and at different times throughout the day! And it looks great with any accent color you put near it. I actually live near the beach, and right now, I also have a "beachy" theme going. I love the look of the sandy colored walls, white trim, and an accent wall that is a great soft watery shade of blue/gray (California Paints Tudor Ice). My furniture, which is mostly neutral in color, dark woods, "aged" black in finish and even "antiqued" white, all together looks fresh with blue throw pillows, white curtains, and a few strategic coastal accessories (a model sail boat, dried star fish, sea shells, tumbled beach stones, a sculptured ceramic lighthouse, etc-but, nothing over the top!). And, if I decide to change my theme later, I'm not married to it! I can easily change my accent wall color and my accessories and have a whole new look!
