Need makeover idea - master bedroom
Off-Paradigm
I'm stumped. We have a big, empty master bedroom (save for a queen bed and dresser.) I'd say the dimensions are 18' long x 15' wide x 9' high. There are two windows on one wall.Currently there are blinds on the windows, the walls are white, and it looks soooooooo very much like an asylum. It needs warmth, and a whole lot of help. We're looking at getting a new dark 'wood' Ikea bedroom set, but it's fairly low to the ground. If we got them, we don't know what to do with all the empty wall space, and there would still be a fair amount of space in the room even with more furniture. We don't even need the furniture. We have enough room in our closet for all our clothes... but the room is so big! And empty! :(So really, I have no idea on what to do. I'd like to paint it a new colour to start.... any ideas where I can get some inspiration? Thanks =)

You have a clean slate and lots or room, you can do anything you want! First pick a "look" (Asian, minimalist, tropical, contemporary, French country, Mediterranean, or even the bordello look) and find an inspiration piece to draw your colors from. A bedspread pattern, a large area rug, a large piece of artwork or wall hanging is a good space to start. Cruise the furniture stores and decorating magazines for ideas. Then get some color on the wall, even if its a pastel or neutral color. Pick a color from your inspiration piece.Get some "big" furniture, like bed with canopy, tall posters, a large panel headboard, or hang a mosquito net over the bed as a faux canopy and for height. Add a bench or trunk at the end of the bed to occupy more space. You can put the legs of the bed on risers for added height (found at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, or Linens and THings). You will have enough room to have two separate, distinct areas that can be visually "anchored" with large area rugs or "divided" with a folding decorative screen, tall plants, open shelves, or even sheer curtains dividing the areas. Have one area for sleeping (bed, dresser, armoire) and another area for:1. A sitting/TV/music area with some cozy seating within sight of a TV, DVD player, or stereo (perhaps hidden in the armoire). Great place for a quiet retreat to watch a movie & have a glass of wine (or popcorn) on "date night".2. A reading/library area with a chaise lounge, a good reading lamp, and plenty of built in shelves for oodles of books and knick knacks. (It can be fun to have little hidden cubby holes or hiding spaces for valuables or just for sentimental keepsakes.)3. A meditation/yoga retreat with lots of plants, candles, a tabletop fountain, bamboo blinds or floor mat, and some CDs of soothing music. (I could really picture this with an Asian decor, and a tea set for herbal teas).4. Misc/hobby center for scrapbooking, sewing, painting, etc... (It's not recommended to have an office or workspace in the bedroom because it disturbs relaxation and sleep to have clutter or unfinished work in the bedroom).5. If you have a nice view from your bedroom, a little "sidewalk bistro" would be nice. Maybe a "night in Paris" theme with photos of Parisian sights, some twinkly white Christmas lights A little bistro table and chairs, a little "bar" area with small fridge, microwave, coffee pot, and maybe a wine center. It would be great place for coffee and newspaper in the morning, or a late night cup of hot cocoa.

My Daughter has a big room like that, she painted the ceiling and walls a chocolate brown, really nice purple window treatments (3 layers) a soft purple carpet, and a reclining couch nice side tables, it is so cozy, she loves that room. She also has a king sized bed and 2 dressers.
