Need help picking the right color scheme.

We just bought our first house (townhome) and need help picking a color scheme for the living room & 2 bedrooms.... The living room we have dark wood furniture and with my husband being a veteran he has red white & blue items all over the place. The decorative curtain rods and iron railing going upstairs are black. What colors can I go with?? We are putting up a chair rail along the walls and I was thinking of a two tones? The 2 bedroom walls are white as well and in the Master bedroom, the bedspread has creams, greens and burgandy in it? With both light & dark wood furniture. The 2nd bedroom is going to be my computer/crafting/genealogy room, so I'm open to color for this room... All throughout the house the carpet is Berber light cream in color... Any suggestions would be great!!!

If you are unsure or nervous about picking a color, then start simple! I always suggest creating a neutral background, something that blends with the carpet and doesn't clash with your decor. For the common areas why not go with off white trim and light beige or bone walls (go a little darker than the carpet for contrast). You could also try a "stone" or "putty" color (a very light gray/beige).These are pretty tame choices but will add noticeable warmth and interest to bare white walls without "startling" people when they first walk in your home, and will probably go with most of the decor you described. This is your first home and you have to start somewhere. After you've been in the home a while, you may want to add more color or experiment a little in the bedroom paint colors. In the master bed rm. why not try to match the cream or green from the bedspread. If it's a dark green, I'd go with a much lighter shade of green (soft muted mossy or sage green?) or a light golden color (a few shades darker than the cream). I personally try to avoid too much red (or burgundy) in the bedroom and just use it for accents. For the spare bedroom, why not go with a whim, anything goes! Pick a favorite color, or a khaki color and decorate with a jungle theme, or antiques to go with the genealogy theme (would make great backdrop for antiques family photos and crests).

Thanks catwoman708, your ideas sound great, especially the genealogy room...
