My own place....finally...BUT.....
sweetlove79
I love my new place. It is pretty small, and I have alot of stuff. I'm slowly getting rid of alot, but I still have alot of stuff. I even have too much furniture. The problem is, I've gotten overwhelmed by the clutter. I don't even want to do it anymore. How can I start over and actually get organized and unpacked??????? Help.

I'm thinking of going home 2 nite from work, and putting all the clutter away in bins and chipping away a little at a time. I'm so busy right now, and all drawer space is already filled with "junk"

take a deep breath and take on one room at a time.

I've found it helps to unpack and organize only your essential items and furnishings, and move everything else to one spot (if possible). Unpack and put away all your clothes, weeding through them as you go to get rid of anything that doesn't fit, you don't really like, or is out of style. Then the bathroom items, then the kitchen. Don't try to make room for everything you have, only the items you have to have. Remove all furniture you don't absolutely need, especially if it doesn't fit. For example, if you have a small living room and a sofa, love seat, chair, ottoman, coffee and end tables, entertainment center and shelves, remove either the sofa or love seat. Pare it down to an L shaped seating area with one end table and either the coffee table OR the ottoman. If you don't really have a good place for shelves, don't have any. You can always go vertical by putting shelves/collages on the wall to display things to keep them from cluttering up tables and drawers. We recently removed most of our furniture when we cleaned the carpet and decided to remove the large square coffee table, the big ugly recliner (no room to stretch out), and one of the occasional tables. The room is much roomier and comfortable with a smaller chair in place of the recliner and coffee table. If we need extra tables, I replaced the extra unmatched end table with nesting tables, and the ottoman can be used for extra seating or put a large tray on it for a coffee table. Get rid of or pack away all your knick-knacks. Rule of thumb is only one to three items per table or shelf. Better to have fewer important pieces, than a bunch of little unimportant ones. And in the kitchen? Get rid of all the clutter and small appliances you don't use, and all the mismatched or chipped dishes and glasses, cookware with broken handles and scratch no-stick coating, and all the lids that don't go to anything. Only keep what you use regularly or will need to entertain (if you actually entertain). Of course you wouldn't get rid of Grandma's heirloom china or serving pieces, but either pack them away safely until you can use them or display them. You can buy inexpensive disposable or pretty plastic serving wear for parties as you need them.
