Leather or Fabric Furniture?

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I hope to purchase new living room furniture soon. We have a German Shepard that loves to rub against the furniture. I think he lays on the couch when we aren't home. The dog hair is all over our textured, fabric couch right now, which is extremely difficult to remove. I thought that buying leather furniture would help with the dog hair issue, but some people think that the dog would wreck the leather with his nails (if he breaks the rules and lays on the furniture when we are gone). Any thoughts or suggestions? My mom said to get fabric and put a blanket on the couch that can be washed. To me, that seems to wreck the point of having new furniture....

LEATHER!It may be a little more expensive, and you run the risk of it getting scratched or chewed. But it is very durable, easily cleanable, doesn't retain odors like cloth, and you can get it recovered just like you would cloth furniture. I've had leather furniture for 10 years, and it's great. It came with a leather conditioning kit, with cleaner, and a conditioner to use periodically to maintain the leather. For everyday, you just wipe it off with a damp cloth to remove dust, crumbs, or pet fur. You can also run a lint roller across it for pet hair. Our leather sofas are directly under a central air vent, and in the summer it makes it feel cooler in the room to sit on a nice cool sofa! You don't "stick" to real leather like you would vinyl when wearing shorts.

I agree with cat...leather is the more practical choice, it cleans up easily and if you buy a quality leather, it is not sticky in warm weather. I would simply consider putting a chair or other obstacle on it when you leave the house, so Fido can't get his nails into it. I do this at my home, so that my dog can't get up onto my "microsuede" sofas and nest for the day!

I'm personally not a fan of leather furniture, because I think the look would be too formal for me. Instead, we have a chenille fabric that's held up very well, and doesn't attract too much dog hair. She rubs against the couch all the time, but she's not allowed on it, though I know that she has been on it in the past. One thing we've done, and that my parents have done for the same reason, is put a few set mousetraps on there. After the first time they jump up and get snapped, they'll think twice about jumping up again, even if you don't set the traps any more. Just make sure to move them before company comes!

Hey,I do believe that leather is the only way to go in a high traffic area. As stated earlier, it is easily cleaned and maintained, where as fabric like carpet shows wear, and needs professional attention upon cleaning. I don't believe that leather is to formal, as I have reserved the fabric for my formal living area. In fact I have a more contemporary, minimalist attitude when it comes to decorating and find that leather fits the style rather well. Too, I live in Florida, and find that I don't stick to my leather furniture, but it feels cool, also stated earlier, when first sat on! Well, good luck, and stay away from mircrofiber! EWWWW.
