Kitchen questions

bgood
Ok, I'm back with more questions. DH and I have pretty much decided to replace the cabinets in the kitchen, so now we're just working on details. We've decided to paint the trim around the window and doors in there, so we don't have to worry about matching the wood. We still have one small issue though because the window and sliding patio doors open out to a 3-4 season porch all done in knotty pine. Should we try to make the kitchen compliment the porch? We're going to have stainless appliances, and we really like the look of dark cherry cabinets, but I'm worried that will look really formal next to the kind of rustic style of the porch. Maybe a more medium/dark stain instead? Also, with all the stainless appliances and a stainless sink, what kind of finish should we look for in a faucet? Shiny chrome, or brushed nickel, or what? The sink will be undermount with tan/brown/greenish (maybe)Silestone (probably) countertops.

That's tough. I think it partially depends on how much of the porch you can see from the kitchen - whether the two spaces feel combined or separate.Knotty pine and formal cherry are pretty diverse. Maybe you are make the porch feel a little more formal with the furniture and accessories, and accessorize the kitchen less formally.I think the faucet finish should match the appliances, which are probably shiny chrome. You might wait until you've picked on the appliances before buying the faucet.Good luck!

I think that work in the porch area depends on how much you use it... you wouldn't want to sink alot of effort and money into a space that isn't going to get used, but, if you use the space, go for an update! You could stain the pine, but I think that it would involve quite a bit of work since you would need to sand it down to the bare wood in order for the stain to take. Or you could simply cover it....my mom actually has a mudroom area off of her kitchen that had a very rustic barn board siding, which she recently covered in a crisp white beadboard and crown moulding, she has a bench and a cherry toned armoire in it for storage. Her space is pretty small, but, it looks really good, and brand new. If your porch area is exposed to the elements you can get an outdoor grade beadboard, if it is enclosed, you could even go over it with 1/4 in drywall, and paint it to compliment your kitchen!
