Kitchen decor

newtexasmom
Hi, I wanted to try this idea for the decor in kitchen/breakfast area. But wanted to check if anyone has tried it before so that i can get some suggestions.I am basically from India though i live here in Texas. I use lot of spices for cooking with different flavors and COLORS like RED, YELLOW, BROWN, WHITE etc.I want to take display box frames with 4 slots each (any idea where i can get these?) and fill them up with a colourful combination likeChilli Powder(red), Turmeric(Yellow), Fresh Basil Leaves(Green) and Seasame Seeds(White)ORSugar/Salt(white), PepperCorns(Black),Mustard Seeds(Dark maroon) and something that goes with this color combination.Has anyone tried this idea before? My only concern is will the wooden display boxes be good to do this with? Will any of the spices be spoiled? Thanks

You could check the hobby and craft stores in your area. They seem to have just about everything and I'd bet you'll be able to find your display boxes. As far as re-using the spices, personally, I wouldn't unless they were in a clear, air-tight container and not likely to attract every day dust, insects, etc. Good luck on your project and welcome to Texas.

Have you considered something larger for more impact. Maybe large glass jars or containers filled with colored sand to look like spices.

I have seen these, but not lately. A craft store would probably be the best place to start looking. I've also seen larger clear storage jars, with items displayed in several compartments (separated by clear plastic), but they are usually items like dried beans, peas, corn, or herbs. If you are able to mount holders/shelves on the wall near where you will be using them, you could display your spices and herbs in clear, decorative jars. I think a wooden rack, shelf, or several square, wooden cubes mounted together would hold a nice array of colorful spices. The decorative spices can be displayed anywhere in your kitchen, and the spices you actually cook with could still be kept conveniently near where you actually use them. And in Texas, it's very common to see a string or wreath of dried red chile peppers, tied with straw raffia ribbon in many kitchens.
