Kitchen Lighting for Vaulted Ceiling

I have a narrow, galley style kitchen. The cabinets are attached to bulkheads extending to 8 feet. Above the bulkheads are planter shelves that are open to the adjoining rooms and a vaulted ceiling extending to 12 feet. The current lighting is a very old fluorescent flush mount fixture. I want to update to something more modern. Any suggestions?

Small, adjustable recessed lights?

Pendant lights or a combination of pendant and recessed lighting. Pottery Barn has some vintage looking spotlights that are nice looking.
