Fall decor

Rebecca_at_Lifestyle
How soon is too soon to decorate your home for fall? What are your favorite fall decorating ideas? I personally don't bring out any of our fall decor until the weather gets cooler and leaves start to change, sometime in early October.

I like to put my fall decorations out right after Labor Day. Wreaths of fall leaves, ceramic pumpkins, gourds etc. begin to appear. I keep adding until Thanksgiving when I change over to Christmas decor.

I would love to be able to decorate outside my Fla home, but the Fla weather won't allow me to do what I want. Lot's of rain and humid conditions.Any suggestion's? Inside great! Any ideal's for outside?

I think Labor Day is a bit to early, and I live in a northern state with an earlier autumn. The beginning of October usually brings the beginning of my fall decorating. I think the leaves should be losing their green but not necessarily be showing their reds before its really fall. Two weeks before Halloween I bring out my skeletons.

If you want to decorate in wet or humid weather you'll need to stick with man-made decorations. I have some great stained-glass leaves that go up in my windows every year. Well, they're plastic but look like glass, which is much smarter with kids and especially if you'll be putting them outside. You might try making your own with empty milk jugs. And, don't stick to just leaves. We have a wonderfully talented person around here who sells milk jug skeletons and other figures at all the fall street-fairs.

MAYBE "YOU" THINK AFTER LABOR DAY IS TO EARLY TO DECORATE FOR FALL, BUT SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO DO THIS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR !!!! I SAY "GO FOR IT" !!!!!!!!!

I just moved to FL from CA, and you're right, the humidity is quite high here, but I plan to purchase silk garlands and the rubbery life-like pumpkins to decorate my front porch. No skelatons for me, but I love the fall. What better way to bring a touch of it to the Sunny South?

Late September and/or early October is the best for fall decorations. If you put them out too soon, then they will be out until Christmas. Too long to look at the same decorations.

I would not paint strictly for a particular season. After all painting is a lot of work. I would instead choose colors that would be easy to live with for awhile and that are aesthetically pleasing. Some suggestions would be for the bedroom find colors that are calming( soft blues, lavender, even certain colors of green, for the kitchen - reds and yellows are nice and they also stimulate the appetite. Earth tones are always a good option. Add you own flair with accessories to make any room stand out. I hope this helped

I decorate for fall right after Labor Day too. I love it and I see no reason not to do it. I add to it when October hits and use Halloween decorations and in November Thanksgiving deco's come out. September - December is just the most fun time to decorate and I see no reason not to. You would be surprised at the number of people who do it around her. The next four months are my favorite time of the year. I will decorate to my hearts content.

Why, September 22, of course! The first day of autumn! Every September 22, I have to go buy pumpkins, squash, and gourds and decorate my front porch. Then usually that weekend I finish the decorating, with orange lights and leaves and branches everywhere.

Craft stores sell the faux fall leaves, sometimes even places like Big Lots will sell them. Also grapevine wreaths and such that you can use the faux leaves on with fall color/design ribbons, ceramic or plastic pumpkins designed to be a real looking as you can get. On the porch/yard, get corn husks (big at craft shows in the fall) to tie to columns on the porch or at your doorway. Ceramic pumpkins or even carvable plastic pumpkins (also available at craft stores like JoAnn/JoAnn E.T.C. and Michael's). I'm sure there are other ideas, but those are what I have right now off the top of my head.

Me too! I would get mine out now, but I'm waiting until I move end of Sept - first house!!! I agree though, Fall has to be my fave, not only for the weather and gorgeous colors, but also the cooking and crafts that come out in festivals that time of year.

As my grandmother said - "don't wear white shoes until Memorial Day has past and decorate for fall when Labor Day is here at last !"

Personally, I don't think a house needs to be decorated continuously for some occasion or Holiday. I give it a rest between holidays. I fly a flag, (I live in Southern Ontario ) and I have a flower garden that blooms from Spring until the the frist frost. I put out fall stuff like tablecloths but I concentrate on my table centerpieces. I go with each season. As for outside, I decorate at Hollowe'en and Christmas only. My Sahmain decorations go up the night before and come down the day after. I get quite into the whole Magik of it. But thats just me

to TeresaWV....if you want to paint your walls to match any season may I suggest a russet/red for your living room. The russet can be accentuated for fall by adding oranges and yellows. The red in it can be accentuated with silver, gold , green for Christmas. Plus you can go with any earthtone to decorate. Sepia throw pillows or a burnt sienna would be nice...

I live in Fl. also. One year I put a eucalyptus wreath on my front door and all the dye ran down my door and on the threshhold. It was kind of scary until I realized it was from the wreath. I decorate right after Labor Day. Autumn is what I miss most about the North.

I'm just the opposite, I like put out my christmas decoration in the summer and my fall decorations in the spring. I save a lot of money doing it that way ..... since decorations can be expensive and all. Some people might call me cheap, other might call me smart; its all about decorating on a dime

My decorations for Fall go up the 2nd week of Sept. and go down 2nd week of Nov. Fall is one of the most colorful seasons. My pumpkins, scarecrows, gourds, etc. make my fireplace look beautiful. I keep a 4ft Christmas on my fireplace hearth and it gets decorated for all seasons. Valentines, Easter, 4th of July, Fall and Christmas. I guess it's to each his own and enjoy!!!!

this is my first time online and i would to say that your help to that person in need of color help also helped me. I too I'm trying to fix up my house and I'm looking for some help. You sound well verse in this area and I was wondering if it is not a bother if you can suggest decoration help for me for my living room that have dark green chairs and light brown wooden floors and entertainment center. and a bath room that have a very ugly dark green floor and walls. I hope that I am not asking for to much but any help is grateful. Also I don't know if it matter but I live in Finland but is from the Bahamas so I am use to the western way. Thank you

I start my Fall decorating around mid-Sept. mostly in the house -- then, start adding Halloween items around the 2nd week of Oct. First of Nov., I remove the Halloween items and add Thanksgiving items -- then the day after Thanksgivng, Fall items get stored away and I start my Christmas decorating -- starting with the tree and outside lights and decorations and then from there to the decorations around the inside of the house. I'm ready to start looking at the craft stores now for anything new I can add or replace something that's beginning to look a little worse for wear. I've learned to start buying new or replacements early when they first arrive in the stores -- they sell out fast! Just moved into a new house year before last -- have been busy with the landscaping but now I'm ready to start adding color to my walls -- found a beautiful gold I want to put in the dining room -- should look great with Fall, Spring, Summer and Christmas decorations. May use the same color as an accent wall in the entry hall. Most of my furniture and the border in the kitchen has greens, burgundies, golds -- accents are burgundies, greens, a little gold and some black. Wood furniture is rich pecans and cherries and a few mahogony pieces.

In my opinion Football and Back to school sparks the Fall season. Although Halloween decor should be saved for just a couple of weeks before. Other wise the fake cobwebs become over crowded with real bugs!

I grew up in Alabama (hot and QUITE humid) and now live not far from the NC coast (still warm and humid). I have found that mums THRIVE in the warm, humid air and they don't usually die here until we've had a really heavy frost or ice. They come in a great variety of fall colors to add a touch of fall even if the leaves aren't falling! I also like to use hay bales and pumpkins (fake, rubbery ones don't rot). When I take down the display, I use the hay as bedding for my flower garden. If you don't put it on too thick, it makes a great compost (pretty quickly here). Hope you find something that will work!

Hi, there is a very nice color that I have used called Cinnamon Swirl from the Laura Ashley line of paint colors at Lowe's. You might like it if you are looking for earthy fall tones.

I feel the first week in Sept is fine ! My daughter is getting married on the 23rd of Sept and she's using an all fall theme. I love fall decorating !

For Teresa: If you're looking for Autumn Colors I have some suggestions for you! I have noticed a fall color theme evolving in my house and these are the colors we have: burgundy, caramel brown, sagey green, pine green. This is as far as we've gotten. I've also been considering a pale gold shade of yellow and a muted or a lighter orange -- or a darker rustier color of orange (something other than Crayola orange, which to me seems more summery).Of course these are in different rooms of the house and I've been trying to coordinate them so they don't appear to brash together.Others to consider might be deep purple, and a straw-like color. It's great to find those little items that catch your attention while you're looking for Fall decorations (candles, Indian Corn, etc.) and draw out color ideas from those...they also give you ideas for colors to coordinate other things like throw blankets and pillows. Have fun decorating, and congratulations on your new home!!

This is my favourite time of year. I start my fall decorating just after Labour Day, since our Thanksgiving is in October. I have numerous items I use including several decorative flags. Gives me a real "lift" and the neighbours always wait to see what I have new for the season. I say "Go for it". It gives a home such "curb" appeal. Gloria Canada

I live in Montana and the winter months sometime come early and make it almost impossible to decorate outside for fall and Christmas...what do you suggest? I love the fall decorations and Christmas and would like to take it outside also..

Opinion From Columbus Ohio
I have a tropical theme home so I don't like to go full-tilt with the traditional fall decorations. I use small touches, such as miniature pumpkins and gourds, placed around my usual candle selections. A small glass dish of Indian Corn candies. I switch out pillows and throws for richer hued ones but still in the same tropical decor. I want to maintain my chosen look of a tropical escape with just a nod to the season.

Start fall decorations when you want! We're in N. TX and it stays hot until early Oct., so I don't EVEN want to think about it until then. But some really get into the fall stuff, so enjoy! Friend of mine did her liv.rm. walls in a soft, buttery color, then ragged on a light golden brown for a "suede" look. It looks great! In the summer she uses wild flowers and sunflowers, then in the fall uses rich muddy tones of deep purple/eggplant, gold, rust, and burnt orange (looks great in hammered copper containers). She goes all out to decorate porch/yard with plants, mums, hay bales, gourds, pumpkins etc... I'm not so energetic, so I just change out pillows, table runners, centerpiece, a few accessories, stick seasonal silk flowers into various green plants, and for special dinners I use fresh seasonal flowers as a centerpiece and on wet-foam (oasis) candle rings with the left-over fresh flowers (I cut greenery off various bushes in the yard). Sometimes I do a few groupings of mums outside & a seasonal door hanger or wreath. I also have a large front storm window with about 4" of space between panes. I open the sliding end panels and put silk greenery or garlands with seasonal silk flowers or dried flowers, & at Christmas I add some twinkly white lights (w/green strands) in with poinsettias and evergreen garland. We have a neighbor down the street that planted a piney-looking evergreen bush or small tree (maybe a fir?) in the middle of her front yard, letting it grow bushy (about 6-8'). Just before Christmas she trims it into a cone/Christmas tree shape and decorates it like a Christmas tree. Years ago she used to surround it with poinsettias and wooden boxes painted like presents. This isn't really a seasonal decoration, but funny! An eccentric lady nearby has an obstacle course of flower beds and interesting items ALL over her yard and porch. She has what looks like a pair of stuffed jeans with shoes attached (or the bottom half of a scarecrow), buried upside down in her front yard right by the sidewalk! It looks like someone dove head first into the ground, with just their legs sticking out! You should see the people stare as they drive by.

I start to decorate the middle of Sept, when the corn stalks come to the garden shops. You can do so much with them and thenI use mums and pumpkins to make the fall season look colorful. So much you can do when you start.

i live in california, on the central coast, and some of our best summer weather comes in september and early october!!! i've been at "harvest" festivals, and it be 95 degrees!!! even so, i love the fall, love the colors and wish i could have stuff out all year.....i start putting up things in september, despite the heat. it's late august, and i'm already itching to put out the halloween decorations, even though my youngest is 18......fall is my favorite, and i'm sure that if i lived someplace where there was an opportunity to actually experience the grand turning of the seasons, i'd be even more enamored with it......

I'd love to decorate around this time of the year. I wanna decorate my bedroom the most, mainly fill it's walls with portraits. I just don't know how to reach the 'full' look. I always feel the frames aren't enough, plus it's kinda hard to do it with actual frames. Seeing it's always better sticking the photos directly to the wall as they'd overlap and give the desired look. Anyways, I've hung up 5 frames Yet, still more to come, hopefully.
