Dreary Entryway

GISGuy
Any tips, ideas or hyperlinks on creating an inviting exterior entry + interior foyer for a house with a dark interior? Exterior: jumbo shake roof, "used brick" and grey exterior. Interior: Red oak (real, not engineered) floors and putty colored walls. Dark oak stained crown and chair molding EVERYWHERE. The only thing I can think of is using lighter wall colors on the interior. I liked the sound of the Bavarian cream color suggestion earlier, and am contemplating painting the molding white.

I find the Feng Shui tips for creating a positive entryway and "flow" of energy through the house very helpful. You can "punch up" the exterior entry with landscaping in bright, inviting colors, a water feature (small fountain or birdbath) near the front entrance, and paint the front door some shade of red. It doesn't have to be bright red, it can also be orange, rust, brownish red, or maroon/claret. For the inside, I like creating a somewhat light, neutral background, and add some "dramatic interest" with your decor in the entry way. If you have a 2 story entry, then add something to draw the eye upward, with a wall hanging or peice of artwork, tapestries, a beautiful chandelier, plants, and draw people into your home with some type of water feature such as a fountain (even a small tabletop one), fish tank, small indoor pond, and mirrors or something that reflects light, such as hanging crystals or even wind chimes. Most any book about Feng Shui will give you some good tips on colors and types of objects to use.
