Door hardware
Linda Lawson
Hello, I have such a dilemma regarding what kind of hardware to use on the doors of my bedrooms. I live in a Spanish revival home but I really like modern. We recently had the doors sandblasted and stained a dark stain. The casings are white. The doors had been white but we wanted to stick with the architecture on the exterior for continuity. What should I do about the door knobs? Is there a rule about knobs and bath and kitchen fixtures matching? I'm so confused. There are some chrome fixtures in the bathrooms and some brushed chrome other places......We don't want to have to replace everything. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's necessary to have the same type hardware throughout the whole house, as long as it doesn't clash when you look around common areas or down a hallway. As for the front door, it's one of the first thing people see when they come over so make it impressive and matching the style of the outside/front of the house. I think the other hardware depends on the style of your house, room, or areas of the house. I'm no expert in various styles so I just kind of use what looks right after looking around to get ideas. I do think it helps to have most of the hardware that is visible from common areas to either match or blend well, and all the doors off one hallway or landing all look the same or similar. Use what you like and have the most of already, then add others as you get to it, they don't all have to be done at once. They can also be swapped around and reused elsewhere. I handle some rent houses for my father and when we change the locks or replace doorknobs, we save them, swapping them between different houses. We put a set in a large ziploc and include keys if there are any, and label them to match in case they get separated later.

It does not have to be the same throughout your house, but should be the same within a room. Never mix chrome and gold. Pewter, chrome or brushed nickel should be ok together if you do not want to replace everything. There are some companies such as Emtek who will put a different style of knob on each side of the door if this is your concern.

Ugh Chrome, Back Iron Through out the house if you will... Different styles can be used since due to the color it would be less noticeable but each can be unique and still look continuous.

I find that hardware in similar color families can be blended successfully. Thus, chrome, nickel and pewter look good together, as do brass, antique brass and bronze. Since you are already working in the silver family, I'd suggest pewter (maybe distressed, if your budget allows) to pick up the old-world style of your newly refinished doors. Also, I'd suggest replacing the moulding with a natural finish trim, or painting it a darker color to complement you new look.
