DH's "sports" room

MissyChrissy
DH and I just moved into a new house with a finished basement that DH is going to turn into his manly hang out. I need some suggestions on a paint color. He just bought black leather furniture and a black book case for the room. I was thinking gray. But all of the grays look blue or silver. It's a dark room without alot of windows. Tan carpet that we can't afford to change right now. Dark wood and dark green counter tops in the attached kitchen that will also be painted this color. Any suggestions? Thanks!!!

What about a black and tan color scheme, with dark green accents? You could go with either brass/antique fixtures, lamps, knobs etc... (English pub look?), or with brushed aluminum/chrome (more contemporary).I wouldn't go with a dark green on the walls, it would be too overwhelmingly dark, but maybe a light tan or khaki. It should make a nice neutral background for his collection of sports memorabilia, ball cap collection, beer logo mirrors and lamps, etc... Is your DH actually letting you decorate his "man room"?

My husband is also planning a "man room" in the basement....ugh! A bar, pool table, big screen tv, the works. His color scheme is based on his favorite sports team, he's planning to buy a couch with his team logos on it, show off all of his collected memorablia, and he's even trying to get a photo he took at a game blown up to a mural size! It's crazy! I've been told that this room is off limits to my decorating....so, my question is....are you sure that your DH will let you have a hand in his room?

Maybe you can see that things get started, then consult him on some of the details? Furniture placement is very important, and you must think in terms of usability, not aesthetics. The big-ass TV must be near electrical and cable outlets, and be able to be seen from all key areas of the room. As coaster will not be allowed in the manly room, surfaces will need to be durable, water resistant to withstand beverages, food, and feet (and the occasional power tool). He will need plenty of shelves to fill up with memorabilia. Colored tape to mark off paces away from the dartboard are a nice touch. If you can combine functions, such as a basketball hoop over a nice big trash can, using a small refrigerator (full of beer) as an end table, or having a microwave and bar facilities within arm's length of the card table, you will be "the bomb"!

Thanks for all of the ideas!! Two reasons DH is allowing me to help: 1) he already painted 2 of the walls blue thinking it was gray and pleaded for my help and 2) I have to walk through this room to get to my wonderful new masterbed room. (If he screws it up, I'm sleeping in my girly guest room! )I'm just an "advisor" according to him. In reality, after the blue walls, he was begging for my help.

I'd go for tan or khaki walls with green and red accents. If you don't have a theme you might consider lodge look with lots of rustic items. It's always manly.
