Cleaning help needed !!!!!

I have a brick hearth on my fireplace.It is dirty with ash and soot. I have vacuumed it and scrubbed it with soapy water and a brush but it still looks dirty. Any suggestions on how to clean it?

My husband just came home with a bottle of "brick cleaner". He wants me to clean the brick on the chimney behind our woodstove. Needless to say, I haven't tried it yet! I think he wants that cleaned, he should do it himself. I am not sure where he found it, but I'm assuming a hardware store (Ace, Home Depot, etc.) or Walmart or the Dollar Store, since these are his favorite shopping places.
