Can I paint a design on a cotton area rug?

I hope someone can help...My little girl got sick on my 9x12 ft cotton area rug. The delay in cleaning meant that her stomach acids (to put it nicely) destroyed some of the color on the brilliant orange rug. There is now a light spot about 12inches diameter near the center of the rug. It's in a spot that I cannot cover with furniture if we decide to keep it in our living room. Now, we all love this rug and I'm trying to figure out a way to salvage it. One option is to place it in my bedroom where my bed will cover the stained area (and most of the rug itself). But I'm wondering, can I use fabric paint to paint over the stained area, and maybe a few other areas to make it look like a design? I was thinking of circles that might look something like bubbles, a sort of modern look. The rug is woven cotton, a flat weave, so I'm thinking this might be feasible, but I'm worried about how the fabric paint may hold up to foot traffic. Any input?? Thanks much!

I think if you Scotch Guard the rug after you paint it, it would be fine. I think the concept is great! You could probably sketch out the design using chalk, so it would vacuum up. Good luck!

I don't see why you can't use fabric paint either. If it wears off, just repaint it or touch it up as needed.

it will look great. there is paint just for fabric and stenciling. think of it this way, since there's already a few spots on it anything you do will improve it.
