Best & Worst in Home Design

I think you guys are being too tough...the chair would look great in the right room with the right colour of walls and accessories. Use your imagination, not everything has to be black, white and/or stainless steel.

I think most of you posters should just go shop at Pottery Barn and fill your house with a bunch of cookie cutter 'safe' neutral tones items. I've got a giant orange chair and everyone who comes in the house says WOW- what an amazing chair. It's called DESIGN. DESIGN is different, unique, cutting edge. That's the point. Go shop Pottery Barn or Levitz. Get something boring. I'm sure you'll find a lot of 'safe' furniture, nothing too 'out there' or 'colorful' (gasp!) that'll make people think you have any sense of style, uniqueness or individuality.

The orange chair is unique. I like it.The ping pong chandelier brings back memories of Captain Kangaroo....for some odd reason...

I agree. They're not welcoming & comforting at all. Just because I like going to smart, hip & trendy places does not mean I want that sort of decor in my home. My home is my sanctuary - I don't want to fear knocking into something all the time 'cos it has "minimalist lines" & "strong graphic influences"!

This all just a re-hash of the vomit colors we all hated and loathed in the 70's. What ever happened to creativity and originality? I think if I came home to colors like this, I'd burn the place down and start all over again.

The photo looks like Ross' "Home" section after a big sale. And these are the discards.

I simply love the orange chair - the contrast of the smooth and supple leather in such a sharp, vibrant color. I liked the looks of many of the other items as well, but the ones with dirty colors are just putrid. Give me those boring neutrals, soft pastels, crisp monotones, clean and vivid color, warm or cool, straight lines or blended... just about anything that does not closely resemble dirt and grass stains, or even worse, various stages of bruising. Oh, and I simply hate those beds. They are minimalist to the degree of institutionalization and look more like a spinoff from a prison bunk than some kind of trendy fashion. Interesting to look at, perhaps, but not something I would ever consider having my child sleep in.

Do we honestly need to constantly buy and buy more useless ****?

Ooooh Big Brother, thank you for covering your readers ears and eyes against my ghastly use of the English language in my previous post.

These colors are not for me. The items look like the world has turned to plastic...maybe ok for a family with kids that are continually messing up, but not for our home!! Give us quality fabrics that look elegant and scrumptuous, not overpriced plastic in gross colors.

Hideous. Simply, truly, hideous. This "look" won't last any longer than it did the first time around. Can you say recycled? (I knew you could) Anyone who lived through the indignities foisted on us in the 60's & 70's will NEVER succumb to buying this garbage again!

molto hideoso! even though i do not have a house of my own yet, i have been in many houses in my life so far. These colors are remenicent of indian and arabic culture. although they are nice on a shelf or PART of a decor ensamble, they would NEVER be the core elements of my home. Simple is easier to work with and is easier on the eyes. use those outrageous details to attract eyes to a certain element of your deisgn. otherwise, YUCK!

Not many people can afford to purchase investment-price pieces in the latest style and color, such as that orange armchair. However, accessories, paint colors or fabrics in new colors, made into throw pillows or draped over a chair or sofa, are great ways to spice things up and make them look new without breaking the bank. Just as with runway fashion, some years are bleaker than others in home decor, but it is always interesting to see what shows up. I personally have seen enough of the citrus colors that have been around for the past three or four years in fashion and home decor, but then, no one is going to threaten to break both my arms if I don't buy any of it, either.

Leave the orange furniture back in the 70's where it belongs.

If I walk into another boring house with neutral colors and the Hampstead House, Levitz style furniture just shoot me. Give me bold colors, abstract styled furniture, lighting that is crazy, anything with personality. We just built a new home in an area that is typically rustic and/or country.... our house is very modern and eclectic... At our open house, everyone who walked in were very surprised and loved the house. And they weren't just being nice. They would talk about the colors we used, the style of furniture, and how they were surprised that a home with such a modern look was actually very warm and inviting....... Bright red chairs, deep blue deco couch, tables with colored wood instead of just wood, a dining table with stainless steel and african wood, modern bathrooms with vessel sinks and Porcher vanities.... Fans that look like space ships.... Give me personality... that's all I ask. If I walk in your home would I be inspired or would it be the same old, same old?

The orange chair makes me smile, but I wouldn't buy it. The color would make my brain twitch after a while; the dichotomy of it all—big comfy chair, completely hyper color—would mess with my mind. I LOVE the bath faucet. Otherwise, much of what is shown is less "minimalist and chic" than "institutional and cold." I love clean lines, but clean doesn't have to mean severe. I love color, but I want it to be a color I can live with. Overly trendy furnishings are easy to tire of, too. I neither want to pay for nor be a consumer of new furniture that will need to be replaced in a few years simply because I'm sick of looking at it. There's a reason certain looks become classic.

Keep the garbage at home!!
