Bathroom renovation

My bathroom has "Pink Tiles" half way around the walls and around the tub and ceiling. They are in very good condition but outdated. Any ideas how to update the bathroom without having to remove the tiles?

My in laws redid a 50 year old bathroom w/ ceramic tiles that were still in very good condition. They had a restoration company come out and put some sort of top coat, changing the color to a really pretty bisque (they could have selected other colors as well). It wasn't nearly as expensive as replacing the tile. you could probably find companies through your yellow pages.

Depending on the color of the pink tiles, it may be a nice combination to paint your walls a light chocolate color. Pink and brown is still very big in decorating right now. With those colors, it wouldn't feel too "girly" or fou-fou. For now, it is a cheap option, and you can save your money to change the tiles at a later date.

Decorate around that color scheme for now, and start saving your money to "gut" and remodel the bath sometime in the future. If the house/bathroom is that old, chances are the sub-flooring and sheetrock behind the tiles has moisture damage and should be replaced with with water-resistant or concrete board specially for high moisture areas. Then you can update and decorate however you want! I liked someone's idea of choc. brown walls to avoid the "girlie" look, or depending or your particular shade of pink go with soft, muted/muddy tones (pale mossy or sage green, gray, biege) or go with soft peach, tourquoise, & a sandy color with lots of seashells. The males in the household might balk, but work with what ya got! Go 50's retro with pink/black/white color scheme. Simple, easy white walls and black accents make a good base for several possible retro looks: Get a "50's rock & roll" theme by decorating the walls with black 45/72 vintage vinyl records, musical notes, poodle sillouettes, anything Elvis, 50's cars, b&w photos of 50's tv stars, add black & white striped or retro print curtains (could even add tourquiose colored accents or Coca-cola type knick-knacks), or update the floor if needed with black & white stick-on vinyl tiles. If you have room, add a small accent table with a "poodle skirt" table cloth and an old looking radio or table top juke box, vintage lunch boxes, antique photos, or goofy lamp.Get a "Hollywood glamour era" look with some classic "glitzy" accents. Replace the light over the sink with dressing room vanity lights. Use a few ornate black & silver (or gold) framed black & white photos of glamorous old movie stars or classic old movie posters, a framed collage of items like a bow tie, opera glasses, evening gloves, old ticket stubs or playbills, or a feathered fan), a luxurious satiny or brocade shower curtain w/shimmery sheers, beaded trim or tassles on curtain tie-backs, fancy curtain rings, antique-look buffet lamps trimmed with boa feathers or beaded fringe for the vanity counter, ornate silver/gold accents (tissue covers, waste basket, soap dishes, towel racks, mirror/comb/brush set, make-up mirror, fancy perfume bottles on a mirrored tray, silver jewelry boxes), and if you have a pedestal sink instead of vanity cabinet, put a little fancy skirt around it and add a small ornate antique-looking accent or vanity table (with vanity stool) for the lamp, make-up/vanity items, stacked decorative hat boxes (use them to store items if you're short on space), framed photos, candles or other misc. items. If you need to hide the floor, use thick fake fur throw rugs or pastel oriental style rugs. For a "50's suburban TV mom" look just "tone down" or use simpler versions of the "Hollywood" look, using some of the same decorative vanity items (hat boxes, mirror tray w/perfume bottle, silver hand mirror/brush/comb set, tissue cover/waste basket set, soap dishes, towel racks) and add curtains out of black and white voile print (or dotted swiss), with black ribbon tie backs. Add black-framed sillouettes of your kids, photos of 50's TV stars, black & white prints, or simple watercolor botanical prints. There's lots of glitzy accessories in stores right now, and quite a few retro prints reminiscent of the 50's and 60's, or scour yard & estate sales, thrift shops, or grandma's attic to find unique items (and maybe some old memories). Scour your sewing/craft supplies (and ask your friends and relatives), check fabric stores for clearance material, or find unused table clothes or sheets and make your own curtains, skirting, tie-backs, or vanity stool covers.Boy, am I going on too long! Hope you have fun redecorating!

I'm curious about changing the color of existing tiles. I too have a house built in the 50's. My tiles are peach, and have a deep burgundy/almost brown strip of trim on the edge of the top tile. We only have the one bathroom so left it, thinking we'd add on later. Decorating has always been a challenge. A couple of favorites were a shower curtain with peach, pink, beige, cream seashell design with peach and cream towels, cream walls, and seashells (we just ignored the burgundy trim). Currently I have a shower curtain with mostly burgundy & coral, with green, and a stone/putty color, burgundy (or deep raspberry) walls, raspberry and peach towels, and green plants, and coral, peach, and deep raspberry silk flowers. (my husband is still making fun of me for painting the walls "red"). I call it a "flesh and blood" color scheme. I think we'll probably wait until we move into another house, then just gut and remodel the bath & kitchen, then sell.
