Any Dangerous Stairway Suggestions?
oldhouselady
My husband and I just bought a new house, and there is an awful set of stairs that lead to the 2nd level where our children's (ages 11 and 1) bedrooms are. The stairway is very steep, and the stairs are pretty narrow. Currently there are the rubber treads on the steps. I think that adding carpet would just make it worse, but I'm not sure. There is a railing on both sides, I just worry about the kids going up and down them all the time. Any suggestions in making them safer?

OK, I have a little trouble going down stairs and escalators. I don't know why, its a quirk or phobia or something. I feel much more stable and secure going down carpeted stairs, as opposed to stairs with a hard surface like wood, cement, tile, metal, or even rubber treads. You already have rails, and the carpet would give a little added cushion in case there are any falls or slips. Just make sure it is properly installed with no edges sticking up, loose spots, or padding that is too thick on the front edges of the steps that will "give".

Don't worry about the kids, they'll be fine. It's the adults who have to worry! I thought the same thing when I moved in my house 8 years ago. My steps are narrow, steep and spiral but they are carpeted with extra padding underneath them. They children manuver fine but for some reason the adults can't seem to make it down in one peice.

Just teach them to always hold onto the railing with at least one hand.
