A new Family Room

forest26
We are under construction but I have been decorating the rooms of our addition for a long time except the Family Room Kitchen area. The room is a nice size 23x17 the kitchen is on one end. When installed the cabinetry will be a creamy white wood, with a med/dark wood island. One long wall has tall windows with transoms to view the backyard. The opposite wall has two doors into the rest of the downstairs (living and dining color scheme, taupe walls, dark blue under chair rail dark woods furniture). The one short wall is the kitchen side the other has another large window with transom and and door to outside. Things we have decided:A garden / conservatory looktile floorbead board ceiling except over kitchen we dropped the ceiling 6" to define it and will put a tin ceiling upunfortunately we will have a This end up sofa and 2 armchairs in there because after the addition who can afford new furniture too? I'm open to recovering the cushions and even pickling the wood for a lighter look. Things I can't decideColors for walls I want to coordinate with the rest of the house but a sagey green with all those open windows seems temptingType of tile for floor, color style we will be tiling in about two months I had a green color but now I am afraid of making a commitment or making the room too green.Window treaments - I may need light control, well, I'll live with it a bit to make sure but hate to cover those beautiful Pella windows.Generally things to give it a finished look.

I AM partial to sage green. I personally think that a neutral colored floor would look nice. Maybe a terra cotta or sand-like color of tile. You can't beat the versatility or price of mini blinds!

If you have a nice view of nature from all those windows, I could definitely see sage or mossy green, even a tan/brown or some color pulled from a forest palette. If you have a view of other houses, a wood fence or your kid's swing set fort, then ?I think you can't hardly go wrong with Jem's suggestions for tile color. (I like green, but it can be hard to live with in large doses.) Not sure how big your windows are, but I'm liking the look of plantation shutters, or for a touch of natural elements, wooden blinds with the wide slats. If they are wall to wall windows and you don't have to worry too much about privacy, you might consider tinting the windows and adding a row of sheer curtains (or several layers/colors of sheers) all the way across the wall, that could be pulled open all the way, swagged back on the sides onto decorative hooks, or left closed. To me, the finishing touches are window treatments, a few simple pieces of furniture, a few area and/or throw rugs, plants, lamps, and a few large accents or pieces of artwork in each room. The little touches and knick knacks can be added later, or as you find them.

Another idea for tile might be to go with slate to compliment the garden feel to the room. There is a lot of color variegation in slate, it would compliment sage or tan walls nicely, and also tie in some of the colors in the rest of the house to help with continuity. As for window treatments, catwoman's suggestions sound nice. Something additional to consider is cellular blinds. They take up little space when open, so they don't block the view, provide great light and thermal control, and are attractive alternatives to mini blinds.
